Ranieri insists he deserves Monaco stay

Claudio Ranieri has said Monaco should repay the faith he showed in them and allow him to keep his job this summer.

Claudio Ranieri insists he deserves the chance to continue as Monaco boss.
Claudio Ranieri insists he deserves the chance to continue as Monaco boss.

Ranieri, 62, surprised many when he signed a two-year contract with the then second-tier outfit in May 2012. The former Chelsea and Juventus boss proceeded to immediately take the principality club into the top flight by winning the Ligue 2 title and has moulded Monaco into Paris Saint-Germain's nearest challengers this season.

However, his position has come under constant scrutiny, and with the approach of the end of the season, Ranieri's future appears as uncertain as ever despite his claim earlier this month that he was “sure” he would be staying on.

The Italian has now told the media that Monaco’s president, the Russian billionaire Dmitri Rybolovlev, should look back at the time when his current coach staked his reputation on the club's ambitious project.

He said: "There should be no coach coming. Last year, no coach wanted to come, just me. I have confidence in my president, so my president is going to believe in me."

UEFA president Michel Platini recently suggested that Real Madrid assistant coach Zinedine Zidane -- who is said to have applied for the France job in 2012 -- would be well suited to leading Monaco.
