Inter confirm interest in Torres

ESPN FC's Mark Donaldson breaks down the market rumours of possible strikers at Chelsea.

Inter Milan general director Marco Fassone has confirmed that his club will consider making a move for out-of-favour Chelsea striker Fernando Torres after a season that has seen Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho offer up a series of negative reviews of his Spanish striker’s performances.

Spanish striker Fernando Torres may be on his way to Inter Milan or Atleti after a rough season with Chelsea.

“He [Torres] is one of the names that interests us,” stated Fassone in a story in the Daily Mirror, while also hinting at a move for the striker on the official Inter Milan website last weekend. “Erick Thohir, our president, admitted that a few days ago. You will discover in due course exactly which players we are focusing on bringing to the club.”

Mourinho’s decision to leave the 30-year-old out of his lineup for the Champions League quarterfinal against Paris Saint-Germain last month despite his lack of striking options was viewed by many observers as proof that his days at Stamford Bridge are numbered. A move back to Spain is also rumoured to be possible, as Atletico Madrid have been linked with a move to re-sign their former marksman Torres.

When he spoke to English reporters last month, Torres said he would not be against a return to Atletico to play under his former teammate Diego Simeone.

“In football you never know. You don’t know where you are going to be tomorrow, in a week’s time or in 10 years’ time,” said Torres. “I’ve had a lot of admiration [for Simeone] ever since we were teammates. He taught me a lot in the seasons we played together at Atleti.

“I always want to work with people I admire. I admired Rafa Benitez from the outside and I had the chance to work with him [at Liverpool and Chelsea].”
