Wolfsburg join hunt for Morata

Wolfsburg are hoping to sign Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata.

Alvaro Morata is looking to make his mark at the Bernabeu.
Alvaro Morata seems destined to move on for first-team football next season

Rigg: More questions

Having already signed Bayern midfielder Luiz Gustavo and Chelsea's Kevin de Bruyne in the summer of 2013, their marquee signing before the start of next season is reported to be a striker.

With the future of both Ivica Olic, who has been linked with a transfer to Stoke City, and Bas Dost still up in the air, Wolfsburg are said to be tracking two of their former players in Mario Mandzukic of Bayern and Edin Dzeko at Man City. However, the latest and most promising lead is Real Madrid’s 21-year-old attacker Morata.

Morata, who has also been linked with Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, has made 27 appearances in all competitions for Los Blancos, but started in only four of them. He has scored six goals for Madrid, and has struck nine goals in only seven games for the Spain under-21 team.

Dortmund have signed Hertha Berlin’s Adrian Ramos for a reported transfer fee of nine million euros, so they appear to be out of the race for Morata. That had seen Wolfsburg step up their interest.

Klaus Allofs, Wolfsburg's sporting director, told kicker that he believes he has a chance of luring Morata to Lower Saxony. “We would only be without a chance if Real would offer him a sporting perspective,” Allofs explained.

Wolfsburg look a certainty for European football next year, with the only question left to answer being whether Die Woelfe will play in the Europa League or return to the Champions League for the first time since their 2009-10 campaign.

The Volkswagen-owned club rank sixth in Bundesliga, but have a three-point lead over Mainz in seventh -- the first spot outside of Europe as it stands.

But Wolfsburg are in the German Cup semifinals next week, where they will face Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion, while Bayern take on Kaiserslautern in the other last-four clash. If Wolfsburg reach the final and face Bayern a place in the Europa League is assured.

Even if Wolfsburg lose in Dortmund, newly crowned champions Bayern will surely beat their second-tier opponents which will mean seventh in the Bundesliga earns a Europa League place.

But Die Woelfe are also within reach of fourth-placed Borussia Moenchengladbach, who only hold a one point lead but have the advantage of goal difference.
