Germany hopeful of Israel friendly

The German Football Association (DFB) is hoping to arrange a friendly against Israel in 2015, the year that marks the 50th anniversary of the beginning of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

On May 12, 1965, Israel and Germany agreed to take up diplomatic relation, 20 years after the end of World War II.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the agreement, Germany are hoping to travel to Israel in late March 2015, and are currently in talks with the Israel Football Association.

“This is also appreciated by politics within the anniversary of 50 years of German-Israel relations, especially by chancellor Angela Merkel,” DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach told Sport Bild.

“The Israel coach [Elli Guttman] yet has to agree, because that is a double matchday, when they also play the European Championship qualifier against Wales [on March 28, 2015]. He might not want to risk a defeat against Germany before that.”

The DFB is also hoping to travel to Spain for a prestigious friendly in November 2014, with DFB general secretary Helmut Sandrock confirming talks between the two associations in the newspaper.

In 2015 and 2016, Germany plan to host England, Italy and Netherlands, according to the report.
