Evra hopeful of progress vs. Bayern

Patrice Evra said Manchester United’s excellent European and away form gives them the confidence that they can shock European champions Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena.

• Payne: United rally before Bayern trip
• Okwonga: Mata and Kagawa star

United drew 1-1 with Pep Guardiola’s team on Tuesday and while left-back Evra accepts they are underdogs for Wednesday’s second leg, he sees similarities with the Chelsea team who finished sixth in England in 2012 but won the Champions League by beating Bayern at their home ground.

And Evra believes United have shown their spirit in Europe, telling British national newspapers: “We always believe when you play for Manchester United. It is not because you win 4-0 against Newcastle that we start to believe we can win against Bayern.

"Before the first leg everyone was expecting us to lose 5-0 or something like that but in the end we drew. I think it is not a good result but it is not a bad result because they scored an away goal. I'm confident we can score an away goal at Bayern.

"We must make sure we pull off a shock, because Bayern are favourites for this game."

While United are enduring their worst domestic season in the Premier League era, they have only been beaten once in nine European games under David Moyes.

And Evra added: “You have to believe and, to be fair, this season we have played not so bad in the Champions League.

"We are confident and it looks like we are all up for it more than the league and in the cup.

"I know it is not professional to say that but it is the truth. We look more like we have the Man United spirit when we play in the Champions League.

"It was funny because all season reminded me of the Chelsea season they won the Champions League when they were not playing well in the league.

"I am not saying we are going to do the same but sometimes you have to be positive, so why not?

"Of course it is unusual for us to say we can save our season in one game. Now we must make sure the fans will be proud for the second leg against Bayern."

Evra, who was suspended for the first leg against Bayern, is set to return in the Allianz Arena after playing in Saturday’s victory at Newcastle.

While United have taken fewer points than Hull at home, they have the Premier League’s best away record.

And the Frenchman added: “I think everyone has noticed that we play much better away.

"It is frustrating because maybe at Old Trafford it is different, it is a different pressure. We have good away form so let's try against Bayern away and make sure we give everything."
