Klinsmann won't name U.S. squad early

ESPN FC's Bob Ley, Alexi Lalas and Alejandro Moreno preview Wednesday's friendly between the United States and Mexico.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- U.S. men's national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann said Tuesday that he will wait until FIFA's June 2 deadline before naming the Americans' 23-man World Cup roster.

Jurgen Klinsmann won't announce his squad before the deadline like previous coaches did for the past two World Cups.
Top tenner: U.S. vs. Mexico
Carlisle: U.S. notes
Hernandez: Heated clash

"There's no reason to name it earlier and suddenly you have an injury god forbid or whatever happens," Klinsmann said at a news conference at University of Phoenix Stadium, where the U.S. will face Mexico in a friendly match on Wednesday night (11 p.m. ET ESPN/WatchESPN). "We will maximize that time."

Klinsmann originally intended to name his squad for Brazil 2014 before the deadline, as Bob Bradley and Bruce Arena did ahead of the 2010 and 2006 tournaments, respectively. This time, not only will players be fighting for roster spots throughout May’s preparation camp in Northern California, but during two of the squad's three send-off games, too.

"Definitely we're going to bring in more players than 23 in our camp," Klinsmann said. "Because you don't know what happens in the preparation period until the second of June when you have to name the roster."

The U.S. plays Azerbaijan in San Francisco on May 27 before heading east to face Turkey on June 1 in Harrison, N.J.

The Americans' final match before opening World Cup group play against Ghana on June 16 is on June 7 against Nigeria in Jacksonville, Fla.
