Kolarov: City stay was the right decision

FC's Alejandro Moreno asserts that Man City are the team that can match Liverpool.

Aleksandar Kolarov revealed he had the chance to leave Manchester City last summer but believes his decision to stay has been a "victory."

Glenn Murray (l) celebrates after scoring from the spot to earn Palace a point at Swansea.
Aleksandar Kolarov played in Man City's Capital One Cup final victory over Sunderland.

• Mooney: City nerves show
• Curtis: Title race deepens

The Serbia international admitted he was considering leaving the Etihad Stadium last year after Gael Clichy established himself as the first-choice left-back under former coach Roberto Mancini, and became a target for Juventus among other clubs.

But Kolarov, 28, has featured more for new manager Manuel Pellegrini, and said the 2013-14 campaign is the best of his four seasons in England.

"Last season, because I wasn't playing regularly, I was thinking maybe it was a good thing for me to move," he told City's official website.

"I had a couple of opportunities but I refused because I didn’t want to go from here. I hadn’t shown the people what I can do.

"Now, this season, I think I have shown what I can do. For me, it is like a victory for myself."

Kolarov has made 37 appearances in all competitions this season, and captained City when they beat Bayern Munich 3-2 in the Allianz Arena in December.

The full-back believes he has proved himself to City fans, adding: "They didn't see me in a real light last season because I didn't play regularly.  I was the same player before, but this year I play a lot more."

Kolarov said his confidence never suffered when former manager Roberto Mancini left him on the bench, explaining: "I had a lot of confidence even when I don't play. Even when the coach didn't play me, he can't tell me I don't know how to play football."

Pellerini's side currently trail league leaders Liverpool by four points, but have two games in hand over Brendan Rodgers’ men.
