Pallotta: Roma will retire Totti's shirt

The No. 10 shirt of legendary Roma forward Francesco Totti will not be given to any other player after his retirement, Roma president James Pallotta said on Friday.

Roma has announced plans to build a new stadium over the next two years.

• De Martinis: Right to retire No. 10?

Three-time Serie A champion Roma revealed plans on Wednesday to build a new privately financed stadium inspired by the Colosseum on the outskirts of the Italian capital, and Pallotta said at the unveiling that he would like Totti to be the first player to run on the new pitch.

“If we could replicate players such as him, De Rossi, Florenzi it couldn’t be better…I would love to have players who can play for 10 or 15 years at the club," Pallotta said in an interview with Sky Sports's Fabio Caressa. "When Francesco retires, we will withdraw the no. 10 shirt. No question about that. And his goodbye won’t be a one-hour affair -- rather, one month.”

Meanwhile, it looks likely that Rudi Garcia’s contract, which expires in 2015, will eventually be extended.

“We had discussions (about it), but there is no particular haste," Pallotta said.

"We are ready to sit down with him at any time, because we want him to stay for a long time. He likes it here, and I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t want to stay a long period of time. But for the time being Rudi should not think about the new contract – he should concentrate on coaching, winning, and getting us into the Champions League.

"Plus, the 90 euros I gave him the other night should be enough at least to pay for a nice lunch or a dinner,” the American said.
