The weekly club power rankings compiled by Shaka Hislop are always a great source of debate among football fans, and there are always so many factors to consider when ranking these great teams on their recent run of form. The latest rankings are particularly interesting now that there are less than 10 games left in the European club season, and because there are still significant domestic and European trophies that have yet to be claimed.
One area where there is not much debate is the very top, where Bayern Munich is a deserving No. 1 after securing its 24th Bundesliga title earlier this week with a 3-1 win over Hertha Berlin. However, the rest of the rankings raise a very important question about the comparative strength across Europe’s top five leagues, and lead me to wonder whether the ongoing battles for the Premier League and La Liga titles are decreasing the value of the top clubs in those leagues.
The top three teams in each league are separated by just three points, and in such a tense predicament it becomes more difficult for these teams to stand out and stake their claim as the best in Europe. Meanwhile, the title races in Serie A and Ligue 1 are not nearly as close, and that makes it difficult to compare those leaders to teams that face tougher competition on a weekly basis.
