Moyes still right for United - Charlton

Sir Bobby Charlton has reiterated his faith in David Moyes and told the BBC that the 50-year-old remains the right manager for Manchester United.

Sir Bobby Charlton is the all-time record goalscorer for England's national side
United club director Charlton admits that Moyes' side have played "really, really badly" at times.

• Mitten: Capital gains for United
• Payne: Rare moment of respite

Following United's 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool, club sources told ESPN FC that key boardroom figures had turned against Moyes with the prospect of the Old Trafford boss getting sacked being properly raised for the first time.

It was noted that Sir Alex Ferguson was no longer backing Moyes so vocally at boardroom level, although it was believed the former United manager had not turned against his successor.

However, club director Charlton, who admitted United had played "really, really badly" at times this season, has never appeared to waver in his backing for the former Everton coach.

"It doesn't mean we are going to change everything," Charlton said. "I'm absolutely certain that we picked the right man."

Morale-boosting wins against Olympiakos -- which saw United overturn a 2-0 first leg deficit to book their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a 3-0 home win -- and at West Ham have seemingly eased the pressure on Moyes.

United head into Tuesday night's derby against title-chasing Manchester City seventh in the Premier League with eight games remaining and a top four position effectively out of their reach.

Moyes' side are 11 points behind fourth-placed Arsenal and 18 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

They face Bayern Munich in the last eight of the Champions League next month and lifting the trophy is one route, however difficult, still open for qualification for next season's competition.

"We are trying our best to make sure that we can beat them [City]," former United midfielder Charlton said.

"If we can, it will be a tremendous stride because we've had a bit of criticism leading up to this, but I never doubt Manchester United."
