Jermain Defoe lifts Toronto FC again

Jermain Defoe delivers another great performance as he strikes for the third time this season, leading his Toronto side past DC United.

Jermain Defoe scored his third MLS goal in two games to lift Toronto FC to a 1-0 win over DC United in Toronto's home opener on Saturday.

Jermain Defoe raised his goal tally to three with the winner against DC United on Saturday.

Defoe scored in the 60th minute after Brazilian strike partner Gilberto was sent in alone by a beautiful through ball from Michael Bradley.

Goalkeeper Bill Hamid made the save, but the ball was cleared only as far as Defoe, who got the ball out from under his feet and hammered home a right-footed shot.

Fabian Castillo, Je-Vaughn Watson and Michel scored in a 15-minute span of the second half to keep FC Dallas unbeaten with a 3-1 victory over Chivas USA.

Castillo opened the scoring in the 71st minute off a Mauro Diaz set piece, and Watson outran defender Tony Lochhead on a long ball and then juked goalkeeper Ian Kennedy for the eventual game-winner in the 78th minute.

Chivas forward Erick Torres grabbed his third goal of the season in the 81st minute to put the pressure back on the hosts, but Michel, a second-half substitute, slotted in a low, left-footed free kick in the 86th and Chivas (1-1-1) lost for the first time this season.

Robbie Keane scored late in the first half and the Los Angeles Galaxy bounced back from a season-opening loss with a 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake.

Salt Lake struck in the 19th minute when Joao Plata crossed to Alvaro Saborio, who was unmarked near the far post. He took full advantage, settling the ball and firing it from just outside the 6-yard box for an easy goal.

The Galaxy capitalized on a poor pass by Chris Wingert at midfield to pull the goal back before halftime. Following the takeaway, Keane outmaneuvered Chris Schuler and threaded the ball inside the near post in the 35th minute.

Dom Dwyer scored a penalty in the 57th minute, lifting Sporting Kansas City to a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes.

Dwyer's winner came after Steven Lenhart was called for using his hand to swat at the ball in San Jose's penalty area. Jon Busch went to his left, but Dwyer put his low shot behind the goalkeeper.

San Jose managed just one shot on goal and Kansas City keeper Eric Kronberg recorded his first shutout of the year.

Vicente Sanchez and Deshorn Brown scored two minutes apart in the second half to lead the Colorado Rapids to a 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers.

Sanchez scored his second penalty in as many games in the 73rd minute and Brown got his in the 75th for Colorado.

Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts earned a red card when he made contact with Brown while contesting for the ball. Ricketts was replaced by Andrew Weber, who hauled down Sanchez moments later. Weber stopped Brown's penalty but Brown converted on the rebound.

Bernardo Anor scored first-half goals from close range with his head and from afar with his left foot and the Columbus Crew held on to defeat the Philadelphia Union 2-1.

Anor was unmarked at the 6-yard box for a snap header off a corner kick by Federico Higuain in the 24th minute to put the Crew up 1-0.

Anor fired a pinpoint shot from 35 yards in the second minute of first-half stoppage time for the first multigoal game of his career.

Leonardo Fernandes scored for Philadelphia in the 62nd minute off a service by Sebastien Le Toux.

The Vancouver Whitecaps remained unbeaten with a scoreless draw with the New England Revolution.

Goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth had two saves for the Revolution, who have not scored a goal in three games this season. Vancouver, which had five goals through two games, had the better run of play, but came up empty.
