Van Persie to miss West Ham game

Robin van Persie has been ruled out of Manchester United’s game at West Ham on Saturday with the knee injury he sustained against Olympiakos.

Hat trick hero Robin van Persie is stretchered off at the end of the victory over Olympiakos.
Robin van Persie will miss the trip to Upton Park after injuring his knee.

• Payne: Fever pitch
• Aguero to miss derby

The Dutchman scored a hat trick against the Greek champions but now United are waiting to find out if he will be fit for the Manchester derby on Tuesday.

And the 17-goal forward, who missed much of November, December and January with a thigh problem, faces another scan to determine the scale of his injury.

Manager David Moyes said: “Robin van Persie won't be available [on Saturday], we're getting him rescanned. We've got a lot of games coming up, it's important we have all our players fit and available.”

It means Moyes faces a decision whether to recall Javier Hernandez, who has not played since Feb. 9’s draw against Fulham, or to move Danny Welbeck, who excelled on the left wing against Olympiakos, into a central role, or whether to pick Wayne Rooney as a lone striker.

Moyes is expecting a difficult game against Upton Park, citing West Ham’s improvement in 2014.

He added: “We got a really good result in midweek and hopefully we can build on it. I think Big Sam [Allardyce] has just won the Manager of the Month award, although I don't know if that was his curse last week. He's turned them around from a lower position but I don't think anyone's surprised by that.”

Moyes reflected on Wednesday’s 3-0 win against Olympiakos, saying: "We had given them something to shout about. There was nothing to be ashamed of about our performance.”
