Moyes targets Olympiakos comeback

MANCHESTER -- David Moyes has vowed to give the Manchester United fans a night to remember as they fight to stay in the Champions League against Olympiakos on Wednesday.

United begin the second leg 2-0 down after a poor performance in Greece three weeks ago, but Moyes is determined to deliver one of the great European nights at Old Trafford.

And he is motivated by the memories of the last time United won a European tie after losing the first leg 2-0, when Bryan Robson inspired Ron Atkinson’s team to a 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1984.

Moyes said: “The support inside Old Trafford has been phenomenal. I think the players will tell you, the first thing I mentioned was that we need to give something back -- me, the team. We need to make sure we work together to give them a night to remember. We will leave nothing behind on the night and give everything to get through to the next round.

“If we can go through, it would be a massive lift. We know we have got ourselves in a poor position being 2-0 down. It is only twice Manchester United have done that [come back from 2-0 down]. I think 1984 was the recent one against Barcelona, Robbo with the two goals. It is not something that has happened a lot but it is something we have to make happen.”

Moyes admits United have underperformed this season, especially at home, but said he is still convinced they can fashion a comeback.

He explained: “The results at Old Trafford have been disappointing but it is not for want of trying. I see the players every day with the qualities they show me.

“They know they can play better -- I don’t think any of them are questioning that -- but I believe in the players. I agree they have not showed it as often as they would like, but I hope they can show it tomorrow night.”
