Vidic: United slump worse than feared

ESPN FC's and former Liverpool player Steve Nicol breaks down Liverpool's domination of Manchester United and their title hopes.

Nemanja Vidic admitted he didn’t expect Manchester United’s season to be this bad and denied his summer move to Inter Milan was motivated by Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement last summer.

• Poll: Should United fire Moyes?
• Brewin: United humbled by old rivals

The United skipper received his second red card of the season, which means he will be banned for Mar. 25’s Manchester derby, in Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool.

It means United are only in seventh place, 12 points off the top four, and defender Vidic insists struggling manager David Moyes needs time to bring about a turnaround in their fortunes.

Speaking before kick-off on Sunday, the Serb told Sky Sports: “What went wrong this season? There has been a lot of talk, we changed our manager

“It’s a year of transition. They’re surprised that it’s not going the same as last year. I knew that it was going to be difficult and that we wouldn’t be winning as many trophies.

“Moyes needs time to adapt to the players and the same goes for us with him, but I didn’t think things would have gone this bad.”

Vidic, who joined United from Spartak Moscow in 2006, announced in February that he would leave Old Trafford at the end of the season and has agreed to join Inter Milan when his current contract expires.

But he insisted it was not related to Ferguson’s exit, adding: “My departure from United linked to Ferguson’s departure? The fact that Ferguson has left has nothing to do with my decision to leave the club.

“It’s reached the time for a change and now I look to a new challenge in Italy with the shirt of Inter.

“My memories of United? I’ve had nine great seasons here. I have fond memories and I’ve grown up as a man.

“It’s hard to think of how much I still have to play for United. I would want to end at the top with good performances, both individually and from the team.”

Vidic was also sent off against Chelsea earlier this season and, because he was dismissed in the defeat to Liverpool for collecting two bookings, United are unable to appeal, even though he appeared to make no contact with Daniel Sturridge for the incident that resulted in his red card and a penalty.
