Messi breaks Barcelona scoring record

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi netted a hat trick in the 7-0 rout of Osasuna to overtake Paulino Alcantara's record as the highest goalscorer in Barcelona history, with the Argentine now on 371 goals in all competitions.

Lionel Messi equals the Barcelona record of 369 goals.

Paulino's record had stood for 87 years, as the Philippines-born striker netted 369 goals in 357 official and friendly matches as a Barca player between 1912 and 1927.

Messi, still only 26, overtook the record in 95 more games but is likely to set a much higher mark over the rest of his Barca career. His next task is to take on the all-time clasico goalscoring record  -- which stands at 19 by Alfredo Di Stefano; one more than Messi's 18 -- and could be broken next weekend when Barcelona take on Real Madrid.

He is also targeting the all-time Champions League goalscoring record which stands at 71 from Raul Gonzalez; Messi has 67 currently.

The Argentina international took to Instagram after Sunday's game to thank the Barca fans for their support, posting a picture of himself wearing the same suit he donned for the Ballon d'Or ceremony earlier this year.

A number of Messi's Barcelona teammates took to Twitter after the victory to congratulate him on his achievement.

Javier Mascherano wrote: "Congratulations Leo Messi. Top scorer in the history of FC.Barcelona. Awesome!!"

"Great team! Photo with Leo, top scorer in the history of #Barca #371 Huge!" Jordi Alba posted.

Cristian Tello added: "7-0 against Osasuna, I’m happy to help the team. Congratulations Leo for being the top scorer in the history of the club!"
