Leboeuf worried for Koscielny discipline

Former France international Frank Leboeuf has criticised Laurent Koscielny's hot-headedness and is surprised that the Arsenal defender cannot control himself.

Laurent Koscielny is shown a red card during France's 2-0 defeat to Ukraine.
Laurent Koscielny was sent off during the first leg of France's World Cup playoff with Ukraine.

Sent off on his Gunners debut in 2010, Koscielny, 28, has followed that up by conceding six Premier League penalties, four own goals and picking up three further red cards.

The centre-back was also sent off after recklessly slapping Oleksandr Kucher during the first leg of France's World Cup playoff with Ukraine in November, something which Leboeuf told RMC must not be repeated.

"What Koscielny did in the first leg in Ukraine is almost unforgiveable,” the ex-Chelsea defender said. "I like the player, but I don't understand why he can't manage to keep his calm. There is a huge amount of work to be done psychologically, questions he needs to ask himself."

Despite the former Lorient player’s faults, Leboeuf still believes he should be one of a quartet of central defenders that France coach Didier Deschamps takes to Brazil for this summer's World Cup.

"When you tot up Koscielny's mistakes, there are a lot, but that doesn't take away from his qualities as a defender,” he said. “At the same time, I don't see who else there is to take.

"We already have our four defenders along with [Rapahel] Varane, [Mamadou] Sakho and [Eliaquim] Mangala. Apart from Varane, the three others are competing for a place, but Koscielny has undeniable qualities."
