Cantona arrested after London assault

Former Manchester United striker Eric Cantona has been arrested and cautioned after assaulting a man in London on Wednesday afternoon, according to reports.

Eric Cantona believes Blanc is the right man for the job
Eric Cantona won four Premier League title in a five-year spell at Manchester United.

Cantona, 47, was taken into custody after the lunchtime incident in the Primrose Hill area according to the Guardian and the Daily Telegraph.

It is not yet known whether the victim -- who required no medical assistance – intends to press charges against the former Old Trafford forward.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement: "Police were called to Regents Park Road, NW1, at 12.55pm on Wednesday 12th March, following reports of an assault.

"Officers from Camden Borough attended and a man in his mid-40s was arrested on suspicion of common assault.

"He was taken into custody and subsequently cautioned for common assault.

"The victim, a man, did not require medical assistance at the scene."

Cantona endured controversy during his playing career after attacking Crystal Palace fan Matthews Simmons in January 1995 during a game at Selhurst Park, and initially received a two-week prison sentence after being convicted of assault.

The player’s punishment was then reduced to 120 hours’ community service, while he was banned for eight months by the FA and handed a 10,000-pound fine.

Cantona – who won four Premier League titles with United and scored 64 league goals in five seasons at Old Trafford – retired from the professional game in 1997, and has played beach football for France and become a professional actor since.
