Baup: Marseille should appoint Zidane

Zinedine Zidane "is ready" to take on the coaching job at his hometown club Marseille, according to OM’s former boss Elie Baup.

• Lowe: Zidane finding fulfilment
• Zizou tipped for Bordeaux role
• Carter: Zidane a flawed genius

Marseille finished as runners-up in Ligue 1 under Baup last season, but after a stumbling first half to the current campaign and a deflating Champions League group stage exit, he was sacked in December.

Sporting director Jose Anigo has been in charge of first-team affairs since, with the club searching for a permanent replacement with whom to begin the 2014-15 season.

Borussia Moenchengladbach boss Lucien Favre was thought to have headed a three-man shortlist until he penned a new three-year contract with the Bundesliga club on Wednesday, with the chosen candidate likely to be announced next month.

After Laurent Blanc made a stunning success of his coaching debut at Bordeaux, Baup told La Provence that the powers-that-be at Marseille should be willing to take a chance on Zidane, who is currently assistant coach to Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.

"You can clearly see that he's ready,” Baup said. “He's an exceptional guy. In terms of image, it would be extraordinary.

“Blanc had his chance at Bordeaux, why shouldn't Zidane have his at Marseille? But his destiny is undoubtedly to take over Real Madrid."

Zidane moved into a coaching position at the Bernabeu last summer after carrying out a variety of roles at Madrid, where he played between 2001 and 2006 before calling time on his career.

Speaking to RMC, Ancelotti said his colleague was ready to face the challenge of coaching.

"I think Zizou could coach a club without any problem, or even a national team,” he said. “But it's better to start with a club. He has all he needs to succeed. He's lacking a little experience, but that's normal. Otherwise he has everything: the know-how, the personality, the charisma.

"His work is very important. I'm very happy with him. He has a lot of enthusiasm, and above all, a lot of knowledge. He understands very well what happens on the pitch during a game."
