Chad Barrett lifts Sounders late

Chad Barrett scores in the last seconds of stoppage time to give Seattle an opening day victory against the reigning champs.

Chad Barrett scored off a wild scramble in the penalty area in the final moments of second half-stoppage time to give the Seattle Sounders a 1-0 victory over defending champion Sporting Kansas City on Saturday in the Major League Soccer season opener.

Chad Barrett gave Seattle a win with a last-gasp goal in stoppage time.

Carlisle: Bright Seattle start
ESPN Boston: Brutal for Revs

Seattle shocked Kansas City with a goal in stoppage time for the fifth time in the past eight matches. Barrett scored in his Sounders debut after Clint Dempsey's header clanged off the crossbar and goalkeeper Eric Kronberg was caught out of his net.

Dempsey came on in the 57th minute just a few days after playing 90 minutes for the U.S. national team in a friendly loss to Ukraine in Cyprus.

It was the first match played with replacement officials after MLS' referees and other on-field officials were locked out Friday.

Joao Plata scored in the 80th minute, Nick Rimando stopped Robbie Keane's penalty in stoppage time and Real Salt Lake opened with a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy in Jeff Cassar's head coaching debut for the Utah club.

Plata, open in the middle of the Galaxy box, scored off Kyle Beckerman's pass four minutes after Luke Mulholland's apparent goal was ruled offside.

Keane, the Galaxy captain, had a chance to tie the score in the 93rd minute after Tony Beltran undercut Rob Friend as he leaped for a long ball from Omar Gonzalez. Rimando, who included several spectacular stops among his nine saves, dived to his right to deny Keane at the post.

Kenny Miller scored twice and the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the New York Red Bulls 4-1 in the season opener before a sellout crowd of 21,000 at B.C. Place Stadium.

Vancouver gave Carl Robinson a victory in his first game as the team's head coach.

Second-half substitute Pedro Morales added a goal and an assist, and Sebastian Fernandez also scored for the Whitecaps. Bradley Wright-Phillips scored for New York with two minutes left.

Will Bruin scored two goals and added an assist to help the Houston Dynamo rout the New England Revolution 4-0.

Bruin opened the scoring 1:04 into the game. Kofi Sarkodie gave Bruin a pass in the upper box, Bruin settled it and sent it inside the near post from 16 yards. The goal was the second-fastest in Houston history, behind Craig Waibel's goal at 47 seconds against Colorado on Oct. 14, 2006.

Bruin made it 2-0 in the 13th minute, taking a cross from Corey Ashe and one-timing it into the center net from the upper right goalkeeper's box.

Boniek Garcia scored in the 23rd minute off Bruin's pass. Omar Cummings completed the scoring in the 91st minute.

Mauro Diaz scored on a free kick and set up a penalty and FC Dallas opened the season with a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Impact in coach Oscar Pareja's debut.

Diaz helped Dallas take a 2-1 lead in the 24th minute when he cut into the box in front of Jeb Brovsky and was pulled down from behind by the defender. Blas Perez, Dallas' leading scorer last season, rifled the penalty kick past Tony Perkins.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Diaz converted a right-footed, 20-yard free kick over the Impact wall to make it 3-1. Andrew Wenger cut it to one for Montreal on a header in the 65th minute.

Montreal, playing its first game under former Chicago Fire coach Frank Klopas, opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Sanna Nyassi finished Justin Mapp's cross.

Fabian Castillo tied it for Dallas in the 16th minute.

Offseason acquisition Gaston Fernandez scored on a header in stoppage time to give the Portland Timbers a 1-1 draw with the Philadelphia Union.

The goal in the 93rd minute got past goalkeeper Zac MacMath in driving rain, and the Timbers stole three points from the Union, who got a goal in the 64th minute from Jack McInerney.

Federico Higuain scored twice to help the Columbus Crew open the season with a 3-0 road victory over D.C. United in Gregg Berhalter's first game as the Crew's coach.

Jairo Arrieta also scored in the Crew's third straight victory over United.

United extended its league winless streak to 13 games. The Washington team's last league victory was at home against Montreal on Aug. 3, although it did also win the 2013 U.S. Open Cup.
