Aguero and Negredo partnership backed

Manuel Pellegrini hopes Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo can prove a prolific partnership again now they are finally able to be reunited in the Manchester City attack.

City endured a miserable night at home against the European champions.
Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo are fit and ready to reunite for Man City.

• Mooney: Rosler reunion
• Pellegrini on Messi rumours

The two strikers have only started 12 games together but they have scored 25 goals in that time, with Aguero finding the net 15 times and Negredo 10.

But they have not began a game together since the 3-0 Capital One Cup win over West Ham on Jan. 21 because of injuries.

Now both are fully fit and they could be paired against Wigan in the FA Cup on Saturday and Pellegrini wants them to link up to deadly effect again.

He said: “It [their partnership] was very productive for the team. And I hope in the future it can be again. In other moments Sergio was injured, Negredo played very well at that time. [Edin] Dzeko and Negredo, Dzeko and Sergio have also done it.”

Without his favourite partner, Negredo has gone on the longest goal drought of his City career, failing to score in his last six matches.

Pellegrini felt his confidence was affected on his return after a shoulder injury kept him out for two games.

“Maybe it is a little bit of all of those,” he added. “It starts with a problem with his shoulders. Strikers also live from the goals they score but I trust absolutely that Alvaro will return to his normal performance. He will continue scoring goals, the same as Edin.”

Aguero, who sat out the whole of February with a hamstring injury, made his return in the Capital One Cup final win against Sunderland and then started for Argentina in their 0-0 draw against Romania.

Pellegrini said: “I think it was very useful for Sergio to play the 50 or 60 minutes with his national squad. He played the same amount of minutes in the final so every match he will improve.”

City’s top scorer has spent two spells on the sidelines and Pellegrini hopes it means he will be able to finish the campaign strongly.

He explained: “If you don’t play every week of course you are fresh in the last part of the season but that freshness must also be linked with his performance.”
