Cavani to miss PSG clash with Bastia

PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic believes that the Ligue 1 title is now theirs to lose.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is set to miss Saturday’s Ligue 1 game against Bastia after returning to Uruguay for personal reasons.

Edinson Cavani celebrates after firing PSG to victory at Valenciennes.
Cavani has scored 21 goals in all competitions for PSG since his big-money summer move from Napoli

The French champions announced earlier this week that Cavani, 27, had been given permission to fly home on Tuesday.

At a news conference ahead of their trip to Bastia on Friday, PSG manager Laurent Blanc revealed that the club’s record signing would not make it back in time to feature.

“They’re the vagaries of a season,” Blanc said. “I would have preferred that he might be here.”

It is the second time in recent months that Cavani has missed a game for the Ligue 1 leaders after returning to Montevideo to take care of personal business. The former Napoli forward also sat out PSG’s 2-2 draw with Lille on Dec. 20.

It is unknown why the 64 million euro signing returned to Uruguay, although it has been widely speculated in the French media that both trips were related to divorce proceedings.

Cavani has only recently returned from injury, coming off the bench to score his 14th league goal of the season in PSG’s 2-0 win over Marseille last Sunday.

The victory saw PSG move eight points clear at the top of the table with 11 matches remaining.
