Hodgson: Agger's tackle was 'honest'

Arsenal's hopes for silverware continue to lose steam as they will now face an important run of matches without midfielder Jack Wilshere.

Roy Hodgson has described the Daniel Agger tackle that led to Jack Wilshere's broken foot as "an honest challenge" but will understand if Arsenal publicly express their frustration.

• Mangan: Lessons to be learned

Wilshere was hurt in a collision with Agger during England's 1-0 friendly win over Denmark on Wednesday, a challenge the Liverpool defender described as "50-50", and now faces six weeks on the sidelines.

"It's always sad when you have a player come from a club, use him on international duty and he gets an injury," Hodgson told Sky Sports News at the annual London Football Legends Awards.

"It's very sad and disappointing for Jack and Arsenal but unfortunately these things happen. It was an honest challenge but he took a nasty kick and I can only hope he recovers as early as possible."

According to The Sun, Arsenal, who have already lost Theo Walcott for the remainder of the season with a cruciate ligament injury, will seek around 600,000 pounds in compensation from the FA to pay Wilshere's wages for the next two months.

Wilshere missed Euro 2012 with a stress fracture in his right ankle and faces a race to be fit for the World Cup. However, he may not have enough time to prove he is ready to play in Brazil anyway with the England manager having said he is unlikely to take risks on players in such a position.

Speaking before Wednesday's game, Hodgson said: "It would be sad to leave out someone who is 100 percent fit and in form over someone who wasn't fit and might only recover during the tournament."

Agger insists his conscience is clear over the tackle, telling reporters: "It was 50-50. You have to go for those challenges.

"I was going for the ball and I think I got the ball, but the referee didn’t."
