Fernandinho dreaming of World Cup

Fernandinho hopes his goal-scoring return to the Brazil side will propel him into Luiz Felipe Scolari’s World Cup squad.

Alvarez: It's all in the hips
World Cup Daily

The Manchester City midfielder celebrated his first international call-up for two years by scoring his maiden goal for his country in Wednesday’s 5-0 friendly win over South Africa.

Neymar scored a hat trick for the Selecao and Oscar also got on the score sheet, while Fernandinho struck from 25 yards.

The 28-year-old moved from Shakhtar Donetsk to City last summer, in part because of his determination to catch Scolari’s eye.

And he told Reuters: "I was very happy with the performance. I tried to do everything that Scolari asked. It's been a wonderful night.”

Fernandinho, who has won six caps for Brazil, has been praised for his performances alongside Yaya Toure in the centre of midfield for Capital One Cup winners City this season, and he is determined to maintain his fine form.

He added: "Now it's back to England and I’m looking to continue playing at the same level for the May 7 announcement when I hope my name will be on the final list [for Brazil’s World Cup squad]."

Fernandinho is competing alongside Chelsea’s Ramires, Wolfsburg’s Luiz Gustavo, Tottenham’s Paulinho, Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva and Inter Milan’s Hernanes for the central-midfield positions in Scolari’s squad.
