Jack Wilshere calms injury concerns

ESPN FC's Craig Burley and Steve Nicol give their take on whether England will be able to get out of the group stage in the World Cup.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has played down fears that he will miss Saturday's FA Cup clash with Everton through injury.

Wilshere had an issue with his ankle after the match against Denmark.
Wilshere had an issue with his ankle after the match against Denmark.

Wilshere took a heavy knock to his ankle in a challenge with Denmark's Liverpool defender Daniel Agger during the first half of Wednesday's 1-0 friendly win at Wembley.

The 22-year-old was substituted on the hour mark, and replaced by Southampton's Adam Lallana, whose cross set up Daniel Sturridge for a late headed goal to finally beat Kasper Schmeichel.

There was, though, no major injury scare for a player set to be crucial to Arsenal's run-in, which continues with the fifth-round tie at the Emirates this weekend before the Gunners travel to face Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie the following Tuesday.

"It is a bit sore, but just a bruise," Wilshere told reporters after the match. "I have had a scan already and I will be alright.''

England manager Roy Hodgson, meanwhile, maintained Wilshere -- who has already suffered a string of injury setbacks in his short career -- was never scheduled to play the whole match.

"It was always the plan to replace him just after half-time, not least of all because Arsenal have some important games coming up, a lunchtime kick-off and then Munich,'' he said. "We had that in mind not to keep him on the field for too long."
