Villarreal attacker Giovani dos Santos was scratched from the lineup for Mexico's friendly vs. Nigeria on Wednesday due to a calf injury sustained during his Spanish League club's 1-1 draw vs. Real Betis on Sunday.
Club America forward Raul Jimenez was added in dos Santos' place as Villarreal confirmed the injury on its website and Mexico also issued a statement that a medical exam revealed that dos Santos has "a possible myofascial tear on his left calf."
El Tri coach Miguel Herrera said the injury did not mean dos Santos would be ruled out for the World Cup team.
"He has to remain calm," Herrera said Monday. "These things happen. Obviously if he recovers before the World Cup, I will keep watching him. You don't disregard a player because he has an injury that could heal in 15 days when 100 days remain."
