Juventus 'amazed' by Chiellini call-up

Juventus have acted with amazement after Giorgio Chiellini was called up to the Italy squad to face Spain in an international friendly on Wednesday, despite missing the last three weeks due to injury.

Chiellini was described as 'cowardly' for his challenge on Bergessio.

The centre-back was an unused substitute for the Bianconeri in a 2-0 win over AC Milan at the San Siro on Sunday night as Juve extended their lead at the top of Serie A to 11 points.

The league leaders had hoped Chiellini could use the international break to complete his recovery from a calf injury which has seen him miss matches against Chievo, Torino and Trabzonspor.

Instead, the 29-year-old will report for national team duty in Milan on Monday and may feature on Wednesday night in Madrid.

"I would have expected at least a call from [Italy coach Cesare] Prandelli to say 'Hey, stupid, how's Giorgio?'," Conte said in Milan. "I don't find this behaviour very polite or kind. We give so many players to the national team, and we get treated like this. I don't think it's on."

Juve will seek talks with Prandelli on Monday in a bid to release Chiellini from his national team obligations and allow him to prepare for next Sunday's Serie A clash with Fiorentina.

Four days later, the Bianconeri face the Viola once again in the Europa League, and a fruitless trip to Madrid is the last thing they had in mind for Chiellini.

"We're amazed by this call-up," said Juve's general manager Beppe Marotta. "I think a bit more communication would help. Chiellini has been out for three weeks and has only been training individually recently, never with the team.

"I don't want to create any controversy, but we will address the issue with the right people tomorrow.

“Prandelli is free to call whoever he wants, but like I say, a bit more communication would have highlighted the problems that exist. Juve always make their players available, but we're a bit amazed by this."

Meanwhile, Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has been left out of the squad after falling foul of Prandelli's code of conduct. He was seen appearing to punch Inter Milan's Mauro Icardi during their 0-0 draw on Saturday night.

De Rossi may also find himself banned from Roma's upcoming matches if the league’s disciplinary panel chooses to view video evidence of the incident, which was missed by the referee.

Sassuolo's rising star Daniele Berardi has also been punished under the terms of Italy's code of conduct, being left out of the under-21 squad to face Northern Ireland after elbowing Parma's Cristian Molinaro and earning a red card in his side's 0-0 draw with Parma.
