Pellegrini faces City selection dilemma

Manchester City look to win their first trophy of the season, but Sunderland is standing in their way. The ESPN FC crew look ahead to Sunday's final.

Manuel Pellegrini has admitted he faces a tough decision as he wonders whether to leave out his Capital One Cup specialists for Sunday’s final against Sunderland.

The Manchester City manager believes every player in his squad has earned the chance to feature at Wembley but knows he will have to omit some deserving candidates.

The Chilean could pick his strongest available side but fringe players Javi Garcia and Joleon Lescott have been ever-presents in their Capital One Cup run while Costel Pantilimon and Edin Dzeko have both started four of the five games.

And Pellegrini said: “It is not easy to choose the 11 starters. All the players deserve to play.

"A lot of them play the whole Capital One Cup. The others play the Premier League or the FA Cup or the Champions League because in that moment [it] was necessary for them to play in that competition.

“If we win the title, all the players will benefit so I will try to choose the best 11 starters for this team as I did in all the other games.”

Pellegrini could win the first piece of silverware of his reign at the Etihad Stadium but feels it would not just be significant for him.

He added: “Not only for the team, for the whole club. All of us work together: the manager, the players, the rest of the staff, the owners. It is very important for the club to win the first trophy at Wembley.”
