'Falcao confident of making World Cup'

Monaco midfielder James Rodriguez says that Radamel Falcao is still hopeful of recovering from injury in time to make Colombia's World Cup squad.

James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao are teammates at both club and international level.

Falcao, 28, looked certain to miss this summer's tournament in Brazil after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in a Coupe de France match last month.

But Rodriguez, 22, has revealed that his club and international teammate seemed in good spirits when he talked to him on Wednesday.

"I spoke to Falcao yesterday on the phone," Rodriguez said. "He's working hard, he's very determined and confident that he will make it to the World Cup."

Rodriguez was speaking at a news conference ahead of Monaco's Ligue 1 visit to fourth-placed St Etienne on Saturday.

The Principality club's stated ambition this season is to qualify for the Champions League and in recent weeks they have opened up a 10-point advantage over Lille, who sit third.

However, they are only five points behind Paris Saint-Germain, and with the league leaders not in action until Sunday, Rodriguez hopes Monaco can claim a win that would cut the gap at the top to just two points.

"From my own point of view, I want to win the league and I still believe we can," Rodriguez said. "PSG are very strong and it will be very tough but we have to keep winning our matches and maybe the door will open.

"That starts with beating St Etienne, a direct rival, this weekend. We have the chance to extend our lead over them but also Lille and the rest of the chasing pack."
