Sherwood: Comeback can inspire Spurs

Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood believes outgoing striker Jermain Defoe will be a huge loss but believes the 31-year-old will be remembered as a Spurs legend.

Tim Sherwood plans to use his side's comeback victory over Europa League opponents Dnipro to lift Tottenham if they hit a poor spell later in the campaign.

Emmanuel Adebayor scores Spurs' crucial third goal against Dnipro.
Adebayor's brace helped seal Spurs' berth against Benfica in the next round.

Europa League review
Last-16 draw

The Spurs head coach saw his team come from 1-0 behind on Thursday night, 2-0 down on aggregate, to record a 3-1 win at White Hart Lane over the Ukrainian outfit and set up a tantalising last-16 tie with Benfica.

Roman Zozulya opened the scoring for the visitors but was sent off shortly after Christian Eriksen's leveller, with Emmanuel Adebayor settling the tie with a five-minute brace.

Sherwood now knows his side can perform with their backs against the wall and intends to recall the evening if his side find themselves in a sticky spot in the future, with a their bid to finish in the Premier League's top four and qualify for the Champions League set to intensify with each passing week towards the end of the season.

"You can only learn from experiences," he said. "This will be a good example of that, many of you probably thought we were dead and buried but the lads really showed belief.

"It was electric out there after and it was only us who were going to keep scoring.

"It is a good platform, a good learning curve and something we can point to in the future."

With three goals required in the second half at White Hart Lane, Spurs seemed destined for elimination. But Sherwood was pleased with the way his side responded to the challenge.

"I was delighted with the character," he added. "I have got a liberty to question their character when they play like they did tonight.

"After conceding so early in the second half it was a real blow for us but it was all based on character and desire.

"I always felt we needed to score three goals to go through tonight.

"It was a bit of a nothing game in the first half but we opened them up time and again in the second half."

Sherwood felt the referee was correct to issue a straight red card to Zozulya after he appeared to headbutt Jan Vertonghen but Dnipro boss Juande Ramos had a different view. The former Tottenham boss saw his side play well over the course of the two legs and was left in a reflective mood.

"It was a pity that such a beautiful game was affected by the controversial decisions from the referee," he said. "We played a good game and controlled the ball with confidence. We scored and then I believe the referee was strict with the red card and that inspired the Tottenham side."
