Bayern Munich close in on records

Bayern Munich are on course to break a host of Bundesliga records as they approach the end of the season.

• Watzke: Bayern dominance not good
Sammer rules out Mueller exit

With a 19-point advantage at the top of the table, Bayern -- who have not been beaten in their last 47 games in the league -- already appear certain to reclaim their domestic title and can now set their sights on breaking 10 records in their final 12 matches.

“You will appreciate records in years to come,” the club’s sporting director, Matthias Sammer, told kicker. “Those stats make me proud -- there is something eternal about them.”

Since they were held by Bayer Leverkusen on Oct. 5, Bayern have secured 14 straight league victories, one away from the record the club set in 2005. They could also become the first German side to go an entire Bundesliga season unbeaten and are edging towards completing the season with a 100 percent record at the Allianz Arena.

Pep Guardiola’s side currently have 62 points and, with a further 36 available before the end of the season, could top the 91 that Jupp Heynckes’ men earned in 2012-13. There is also the prospect of becoming the first side to win the Bundesliga in March as well as potentially surpassing last season’s 25-point margin over the second-placed team in the division.

This weekend, against Schalke, they could become the first side to have scored at least two goals in 15 consecutive games. However, having scored 61 in 22 games to date, it may prove difficult to break the 101-goal record set by the 1971-72 Bayern team, when Gerd Mueller alone contributed 40.

Nonetheless, they are likely to boast far superior defensive stats to the 1972 vintage, who conceded 38 goals en route to the title. Bayern set a new record last year when conceding only 18 goals all season, and so far this time around they have conceded just nine. They could also surpass the 21 clean sheets they claimed last season, with the side having kept 14 shut-outs so far.

However, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer -- who insisted clean sheets were “always a team effort” -- told kicker the players were focused solely on winning.

“It’s not our target to break records,” he said. “For us, only titles count.”
