Phil Jagielka to miss Denmark friendly

LIVERPOOL -- Everton centre-back Phil Jagielka will miss England’s friendly with Denmark after picking up a hamstring injury.

Jagielka has been named permanent captain for Everton next season
Jagielka started seven of England's World Cup qualifiers, more than any other defender.

O'Farrell: Lukaku boost

The 31-year-old is out of his club’s Premier League home match against West Ham this Saturday because of the problem, manager Roberto Martinez said.

And Martinez expects Jagielka to be missing for the next fortnight, ruling him out Roy Hodgson’s squad for the Wembley meeting with Denmark on March 5.

"Phil Jagielka has felt his hamstring a little bit over the last two days," Martinez told his prematch news conference ahead of the West Ham game. "He’s going to miss the game at the weekend and he won’t be available for England.

"I don’t think it’s going to be a long-term injury, but Phil is going to be missing for a couple of weeks."

It is the second time this season that Jagielka has been forced out of action with hamstring trouble.

He missed three matches after picking up a similar injury during Everton’s 1-0 defeat at home to Sunderland on Dec. 26.

Meanwhile, Martinez has suggested that Gareth Barry’s form in Everton’s midfield warrants an end to his 21-month England exile.

The 33-year-old last played for England in May 2012, but has been a key player for Martinez since joining on a season’s loan from Manchester City in September.

Everton’s manager said: "I think that Gareth is ready to help England. The experience he brings is quite unique. It would be a great honour if he got a recall."
