Mourinho: Fans can play a huge part

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes Chelsea's fans can play a huge role in pushing his team through to the Champions League quarterfinals, after the Blues secured a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their last-16 tie against Galatasaray.

Delaney: Three things
Lythell: Mixed emotions

Mourinho admitted the result could and possibly should have been better for his side after their impressive first-half showing against Roberto Mancini’s team, with his belief the Stamford Bridge faithful can play a huge role in the outcome of the tie a clear rallying call to the club’s fans.

“This result is not amazing and the situation in the second leg will be difficult,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “If Stamford Bridge can give us 10 percent of what this [Turkish] public game them in this game, it will be fantastic for us. I just ask [Chelsea fans] for 10 percent of what this stadium gave Galatasaray and then we will go through.

“This is Turkey, this is Istanbul, this is Turkish football, very emotional. We were playing against a big club with big players and it was not easy. In the first half it was our game and we had chances to kill it.

"I’m not critical with my striker because my striker had a very good game, but we were missing the last pass, the last control because we had many occasions to do the second goal and the second goal changes completely the story on the game.

“In the second half, they put pressure on us. They have very powerful strikers and their strikers are both very good and attack a lot. They put pressure on us and step by step, we were [pushed] back. I can’t complain, the players were fantastic. We had lot of problems before the game with injuries and we will have a difficult time at Stamford Bridge, that’s for sure.”

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard admitted he was unsure whether his side had missed an opportunity to secure a decisive advantage ahead of the second leg in London, but the veteran midfielder was content with the outcome in Istanbul.

“It’s half-time and I wouldn’t go and say this was a great result. We know what a strong team they are,” said Lampard. “We were all disappointed at half-time that we weren’t more than 1-0 up. We controlled it, they didn’t have any chances and we had four or five very good counter attacks and could have made more of them.

“When it is 1-0, you know with the atmosphere here, they can always get a bit of an up and get back into the game. This is one of those atmospheres you play football for and it lifted them. We ended up sitting back and it is one of those results you are happy with, but we know we have a lot of hard work to do when we get home.”

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba suggested his Galatasaray side are happy with the 1-1 draw on home soil and said the tide in the tie could turn in his side’s favour if they score first in the return match at Stamford Bridge.

“It was a tough game, exactly what I expected in terms of intensity and fight,” stated Drogba. “I think it is a good result for us. Chelsea is a better team on paper and we have shown that we can create some problems for them. Now we go to the Bridge and try to create a good result.

“You put the emotion on the side and it was more like another day at Cobham [Chelsea training ground] when you train against your team-mates. There is another game coming so let’s see. I want to go there and make a good result and quality.

"It’s going to be difficult. I know how the atmosphere is at Stamford Bridge and how the players will perform them, but it is possible. If we manage to score a goal there, it’s a different game. 1-1 is not a bad result for us.”
