Zouma wary of pitfalls in Chelsea move

The FC team previews tomorrow's Champions League match between Galatasary and Chelsea.

St Etienne starlet Kurt Zouma has told Le Parisien he is aware of the pitfalls that fame and fortune could bring in his high-profile move to Chelsea.

Kurt Zouma decided to join Chelsea after a phone call from Blues boss Jose Mourinho.

• Worrall: No room for sentiment
Eto'o 'annoyed by Mourinho'

The 19-year-old centre-back completed a 15 million euro transfer to the Blues during the January transfer window before being immediately loaned back to the Ligue 1 club.

The teenage defender's switch to west London will not only bring more attention, but a greater income than he currently earns in France.

However, Zouma is conscious he needs to avoid falling into the traps that have seen so many young talents fail to fulfil their potential.

"We earn a lot of money, and -- there is no denying it -- it's risky at our age. You mustn't rest on your laurels, " he said.

"As long as I have good people around me, and things are handled, it will be fine. It's talent that makes the difference."

After a phone call from Jose Mourinho convinced him to move to Stamford Bridge, Zouma also revealed he had spoken to Chelsea forward Samuel Eto'o, who gave the youngster his telephone number with the offer of a sympathetic ear should the new signing require advice.

With his St Etienne teammates already asking him for Chelsea shirts as souvenirs, the defender has revealed that the atmosphere at the Ligue 1 club is good -- particularly as Les Verts have also pocketed a handsome fee for their youth academy product.

"I'm proud. Everyone's a winner. I'm happy to leave on good terms," said Zouma, who is taking English lessons to help speed his adaptation to life in England.

"I set myself the goal of succeeding. I have nothing to do with the 15 million [fee], I didn't negotiate that. I have to prove myself."
