Inter chief talks up Ajax coach De Boer

Inter Milan president Erick Thohir has expressed his admiration for Ajax coach Frank de Boer, but insists that Walter Mazzarri's position with the Nerazzurri is safe.

Frank de Boer has won the Dutch title with Ajax for the last three seasons
De Boer has won the Dutch title in each of his three seasons as a manager.

Thohir, on his latest visit to Milan, revealed he is paying attention to former Netherlands international De Boer, who is currently striving for a fourth consecutive Eredivisie title.

"I admire the work he's doing at Ajax," Thohir told Mediaset. "I like him as a coach, but this does not mean I want to bring him here.

"I'm very happy with Mazzarri, a coach I talk with and share ideas with regularly. He's one of the best coaches around and it's important that we support him and get behind him now."

Nevertheless, Thohir did not say Mazzarri, who has a two-year contract with the Nerazzurri, will be in charge of the club in the long term.

"We'll just take things one step at a time," he added.

The first step is to ensure Inter  -- currently fifth in the Serie A table -- return to European football next season.

"We want to get as many points as we can, game by game, because we can only reach our objective point by point," he told Inter Channel. "We've got 13 games left and we want to get the points we need to play in Europe.

"It would not be positive if Inter didn't play in Europe for two years running."

At the same time, Thohir urged caution, saying that the project to restore the club to a place among Europe's elite will still take time.

"We're in a period of transition which will last two or three years," he added. "We got some good results on the January transfer market and let's hope we can do the same again in June to create a squad which can be competitive in Europe.

"We all hope we can have a good season next year, but at the same time, we want to ensure we are competitive in the next three to four months too."
