Le Roy: Eto'o annoyed by Mourinho

Former Cameroon coach Claude Le Roy has revealed Samuel Eto'o is "very annoyed" following Jose Mourinho's jibe over his age, while Canal Plus insist the Chelsea boss knew his comments would be aired.

Jose Mourinho will be hoping that Samuel Eto'o can get on the scoresheet against his former club
Samuel Eto'o and Jose Mourinho won the Champions League together at Inter Milan in 2010.

• Worrall: No room for sentiment

In Tuesday's news conference ahead of Chelsea's Champions League game at Galatasaray, Mourinho criticised Canal Plus for publishing comments in which he jokingly cast doubt over the age of 32-year-old Eto’o -- and the qualities of all the strikers in his squad -- in a private conversation.

The Chelsea manager branded the French broadcaster's decision to do so a "disgrace" but Le Roy -- speaking on the Canal Plus show Talents d'Afrique -- said Eto'o had spoken to him of his anger at Mourinho.

"I had [Eto’o] on the phone just before I came on screen, and he's very annoyed," said Le Roy, 66, who has coached Cameroon twice during a long coaching career in Africa.

"Actually, Mourinho went to see him before he saw the pictures and told him to not believe everything that was going to be said. And that he had said nothing about him. But I can tell you that Samuel didn't like it."

Mourinho told media in Istanbul they should be "embarrassed" by Canal Plus airing what he claimed was part of an off-the-record conversation.

However, the French TV station offered a robust defence of its actions, arguing Mourinho was fully aware the comments were being filmed.

"These are not stolen images,” Herve Mathoux, the presenter and chief editor of the show which broadcast the Mourinho interview on Sunday, is quoted as saying by footballmercato.web.

"The camera wasn't 10 metres away, it's not on zoom. You could see the red light and he was clearly aware he was being filmed, especially as he's someone who comes across cameras so often and who is used to the media.

"Mourinho perhaps did not want to fully assume what he had said. He could have come and seen the journalist and asked us not to use the images. He did not make any special request."

Chelsea face Turkish side Galatasaray in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie on Wednesday evening, with Mourinho set to be reunited with yet another former striker in the form of Cimbom forward Didier Drogba.
