Rodgers concerned by Reds' defending

Brendan Rodgers implied Liverpool’s defenders are not good enough by admitting they concede “poor” goals and denying it is a failure of coaching.

Brendan Rodgers' saw his Liverpool side overcome Swansea 4-3.

Courtesy of braces from Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson, Liverpool beat Swansea 4-3 at Anfield but have now conceded 12 goals in their last seven league games.

And while Rodgers disputed the awards of the free kick and the penalty that led to Wilfried Bony’s brace for Swansea, he admitted the scale of his side's problems at the back.

• Jolly: Liverpool mounting title challenge

The Liverpool manager conceded he substituted Daniel Agger, who was not injured, because he wanted Kolo Toure to provide greater physicality against Bony.

And Rodgers said: “We did not defend anywhere near well enough in any aspect.

“The problem is it is not coaching. Some of the things we concede goals in, you can’t coach that. There’s a feel when you are in the game of how to defend and you have to use your experience to defend properly.

“We concede poor goals. It isn’t so much structurally. It’s mistakes or decision making that cost us.”

Liverpool have taken 20 points from their last eight games, despite their defensive problems, and Rodgers admitted: “Up until now we have got away with it.

“I thought two of the goals were probably soft. I didn’t think it was a free kick and it was never a penalty. Bony is a big strong guy and goes over in the box but it’s not a penalty.”

Rodgers said that, while league leaders Chelsea won 1-0 on Saturday, his side cannot mount that sort of title challenge.

He added: “It is not our style. I worry always to play good football. I am not one that is totally satisfied by just grinding out results.

“It is about winning, that is what professional sport is about but I will always concentrate on performance. When we play well, more times than not we get the win.”
