Henry backs Arsenal's title hopes

New York Red Bulls striker Thierry Henry explains the complexities of playing in the MLS.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes his former club can still win the Premier League this season.

Cross: Arsenal must avoid UCL hangover

“This last loss against Liverpool, everybody was [acting] like it’s the end,” the club’s all-time top scorer, referring to the Gunners’ 5-1 defeat on Feb. 8, told ESPN FC in an interview this week.

“It’s not the end,” Henry said. “They’re still there. They’re still in the mix.”

Arsenal heads into Saturday’s match against Sunderland trailing league leader Chelsea by a single point. In the two weeks since that lopsided defeat at Anfield, the Gunners have knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup, tied Manchester United in the Premier League and lost to Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.

Thierry Henry feels severe punishments would work effectively as a deterrent
Henry is preparing for his fifth season in New York.

Henry, speaking at MLS’s annual media day ahead of his fifth season with the New York Red Bulls, admitted he didn’t expect the London side to be alive in all three competitions at this stage of the season.

“I love Arsenal, but let’s all be honest,” said the 36-year-old, who last played for the Gunners on loan in early 2012, “I don’t think a lot of people thought that they were going to compete for the title, to still be in the Champions League, still in the FA Cup and playing well.”

Henry is confident that the Gunners -- who have high-stakes games remaining against Chelsea and Manchester City -- have enough quality and depth to outlast their big-spending rivals over the final few months of the campaign and end a silverware drought which dates back to 2005, when the club won the FA Cup.

“People say [they struggle] when they play against the big teams or whatever, but they are still in the mix,” he said. “Hopefully they’re going to win something, and hopefully it can be the league.”
