Ozil sorry for Arsenal penalty miss

Mesut Ozil has issued an apology to Arsenal fans for his penalty miss in Wednesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.

• Spotlight: Time for Wenger to drop Ozil?
• Mangan: Arsenal Punishment too severe
• Cross: Gunners at risk of UCL hangover

Arsenal’s hopes of reaching the quarterfinals are in tatters with second-half strikes from Toni Kroos and Thomas Mueller putting Bayern in the driving seat ahead of the second leg.

Mesut Ozil was public enemy No. 1 at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

It could have been a different story had Ozil not missed a first-half spot-kick with the score still 0-0 at the Emirates Stadium. However Bayern pounced after Wojciech Szczesny was sent off for bringing down Arjen Robben shortly before half-time.

Ozil was criticised for his miss by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who questioned his technique after a short run up, though teammate Lukas Podolski leapt to his defence.

Taking to his personal Facebook page, Ozil wrote: “The next morning doesn’t feel better either. Sorry guys -- it wasn’t planned that way. Outnumbered, it was really hard to win against this team.”

It was another poor display from a player who has come under fire in recent weeks, having not found the back of the net for Arsenal since Dec. 8.
