Tottenham downed by Konoplyanka

Tottenham's reported January target Yevhen Konoplyanka scored a decisive penalty against them as Dnipro won 1-0 in their Europa League last-32 first leg in Ukraine.

Fitch: Chaotic Spurs slump to defeat

The 24-year-old saw a deadline-day move to Liverpool collapse with Spurs also linked along the way, though coach Tim Sherwood has always distanced the club from a deal.

Konoplyanka himself said he does not see the tie as an audition for a summer transfer but he was lively throughout and gave full-back Kyle Naughton an unsettled evening.

The penalty was awarded with just 10 minutes remaining after referee Antonio Miguel Lahoz had turned down several claims from both sides throughout the game.

Konoplyanka stepped up and scored with the air of a player with the confidence to move on to bigger and better things, but for now he has given Dnipro and former Spurs boss Juande Ramos a lead to defend at White Hart Lane next week.

It could have been a different story, though, had Roberto Soldado not missed in spectacular style earlier in the second half.

Spurs boasted a 100 percent record in getting out of their group under previous head coach Andre Villas-Boas but, with Sherwood taking charge of his first European game, it was a second-half sitter turned over the crossbar by summer signing Soldado which he will be left pondering.

Swansea produced a Europa League performance packed with character and class at the Liberty Stadium -- but they could not find a goalscoring punch to floor Italian heavyweights Napoli, playing out a 0-0 draw.

The Welsh side created several attacking opportunities and were comfortably the more dangerous team, yet Napoli will return home as favourites to progress following next Thursday's last-32 return leg.

Rafael Benitez's men were fortunate to escape from South Wales with a draw, though, such was the quality of Swansea's display.

Dani Osvaldo scored his first goal for Juventus as the Serie A leaders won 2-0 in the first leg of their clash with Trabzonspor.

Paul Pogba added a crisp second in second-half injury time to increase the hosts' lead and put them in control of the tie ahead of the second leg on Feb. 27.

Antonio Conte's side shrugged aside the memory of their last game against Turkish opposition, a 1-0 loss to Galatasaray that dumped them out of the Champions League in December, to take a two-goal lead into next week's second leg.

But Trabzonspor, who came into the game on the back of an abject run which has seen them fail to record a victory in 2014, will feel aggrieved after Olcan Adin's second-half strike was chalked off because the ball was adjudged to have gone out of play.

Ten-man Lugodorets pulled off an impressive 1-0 victory over Lazio in their first-leg tie in Rome.

Roman Bezjak's goal on the stroke of half-time handed the Bulgarian outfit a slender advantage to take into next week's return leg in Razgrad. Lazio should have pulled level early in the second half but Felipe Anderson's spot kick was kept out by Ludogorets goalkeeper Vladislav Stoyanov.

Ludogorets captain Stevoslav Dyakov had a bad night as he saw his early penalty saved by Lazio goalkeeper Etrit Berisha before being sent off in the 55th minute having picked up his second yellow card.

Lazio's numerical advantage lasted 18 minutes as Luis Cavanda joined Dyakov in the tunnel after seeing a straight red for a late challenge on Iordan Minev.

Jonathan Soriano scored one of the goals of the Europa League season, netting from the halfway line as Salzburg thrashed an off-colour Ajax 3-0 at the Amsterdam ArenA.

The Austrian side were already 2-0 ahead when Soriano collected a stray ball just inside his own half, took a touch to get the ball out of his feet and sent a stunning strike looping over goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.

Salzburg captain Soriano opened the scoring from the penalty spot and was also involved in Sadio Mane's 21st-minute effort before capping proceedings with his memorable effort.

Valencia's substitutes made the difference with two late goals to earn a 2-0 victory in the away leg of their tie with Dynamo Kiev.

Eduardo Vargas and Sofiane Feghouli, both second-half replacements, scored in the 80th and 90th minutes respectively to put the Spanish side in charge of the tie.

The match was played in Nicosia, Cyprus, because of the ongoing violent clashes in the Ukrainian capital and it was the designated visitors who adapted better, squandering chances to take the lead before finally making the breakthrough.

Fiorentina put a foot in the last 16 as they claimed a comfortable 3-1 advantage in the first leg of their tie with Esbjerg.

Esbjerg striker Martin Pusic cancelled out Alessandro Matri's opener in the 10th minute but Josip Ilicic put the Italians back in front soon after.

Alberto Aquilani wrapped up the win before half-time after converting his team's third from the penalty spot.

Striker Rodrigo Lima handed Benfica a first-leg 1-0 advantage as they took a step towards the last 16 against PAOK Salonika in Greece.

Benfica, who dropped into the competition after finishing third behind Paris Saint-Germain and Olympiakos in Champions League Group C, shaded a game of few clear-cut chances.

Lima's 59th-minute strike was enough to clinch a 1-0 victory over PAOK Salonika and leave the Portuguese side in pole position ahead of next week's return in Lisbon.

Eintracht Frankfurt struck twice in quick succession after the break to stun Porto and seal a hard-earned 2-2 draw in a pulsating match at Estadio Dragao.

Porto took a two-goal lead through Ricardo Quaresma and Silvestre Varela, before Joselu pulled a goal back with a well-struck drive, and Porto's defensive pair of Alex Sandro and goalkeeper Helton combined to deflect the ball over their own goal-line for the equaliser.

The comeback gives Armin Veh's side the edge going into the second leg at the Commerzbank Arena on Feb. 27.

Frankfurt had lost just one of their last eight Europa League matches, while Porto were making their first appearance in this season's competition having dropped out of the Champions League after finishing third in their group.

Viktoria Plzen had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in new boss Dusan Uhrin Jr's first game in charge at the Doosan Arena.

Stanislav Tecl's 11th goal of the season after 62 minutes looked set to give the Czechs the edge in this last-32 tie, but Luiz Adriano equalised to give Shakhtar an away goal.

Both sides were playing their first competitive match since the last round of the Champions League group stage back in December, but neither looked rusty.

Plzen were comfortable in possession, while Shakhtar were happy to soak up pressure and counter-attack at pace, with Alex Teixeira, Ismaily and Taison all coming close after swift attacks.

Lyon remain unbeaten in the Europa League this season after a goalless draw in the first leg of their clash against Chornomorets.

In a game of very few chances, Steed Malbranque and Gael Danic came closest to opening the scoring.

Chornomorets were impressive, however, and could even have snatched a precious win when Kirill Kovalchuk narrowly missed the target from 20 yards.

Ten-man Rubin Kazan refused to be beaten by Real Betis in their first-leg clash, fighting back to record a 1-1 draw.

Rubin looked dead and buried when they were 1-0 down and had Alexander Prudnikov sent off for two bookable offences in as many minutes.

But the Russian outfit clawed back to earn a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Benito Villamarin through a Roman Eremenko penalty.

Head coach Vladimir Maminov will be satisfied to take an all-important away goal into the return leg at the Kazan Arena in a week's time. It promises to be a feisty affair after this tie saw nine yellow cards and one red.

Dare Vrsic came off the bench to score a wonder goal and keep Maribor's Europa League hopes alive with a 2-2 draw against Sevilla.

Second-half goals from Federico Fazio and Kevin Gameiro had put the Spanish side ahead after cancelling out Marcos Tavares' opener, but Vrsic struck from 25 yards to give Maribor a fighting chance in Seville next week.

Goalkeeper Yann Sommer ensured Basel returned to Switzerland with a slight advantage after a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Maccabi Tel-Aviv in Israel.

Sommer denied Maccabi striker Eran Zahavi 18 minutes from time as a tight contest ended goalless.

The home side started and finished strongly, but were unable to make their periods of pressure count to leave the tie in the balance ahead of next week's second leg.

IIya Maksimov's red card brought some last-gasp drama to an otherwise uninspiring goalless draw between Anzhi Makhachkala and Genk.

The meeting of Russia's 16th-placed side and Belgium's sixth never seemed likely to produce a contest teeming with quality and the first-leg clash lived down to those modest expectations with few clearcut scoring chances.

Anzhi had the better of proceedings without finding a way past Laszlo Koteles in the away goal, but ended the match with 10 men after Maksimov's dismissal in the 89th minute.

Nick Viergever's 89th-minute goal gave AZ Alkmaar a first-leg 1-0 advantage in their tie with Slovan Liberec at the Stadion U Nisy.

AZ dominated but struggled to break down their opponents before Viergever took advantage of a goalkeeping error to give the away side the lead going into the second leg.
