Date confirmed for Copa del Rey final

This season’s Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Real Madrid will be staged on April 16 at Valencia’s Estadio Mestalla.

Atletico Madrid won the Copa del Rey last season.

The showpiece event is a repeat of the 2011 final which also took place in the same venue -- a game in which Madrid ran out 1-0 winners.

The match was originally scheduled for April 19, however, a decision to move the date was made following a meeting between representatives of the two La Liga clubs and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) in Madrid on Thursday.

A statement on the RFEF’s official website read: “The final of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, April 16 will be held at 21.30 CET at the Mestalla stadium in Valencia.”

It is believed that the scheduled dates for the first legs of the Champions League semifinal, to be played on April 22 and 23, may have played a part in the decision, as well as the fact that Spain celebrates Holy Week that week.

Barca have won the Copa del Rey a record 26 times, while Madrid, who lost out to Atletico Madrid in last year’s final, have lifted the trophy 18 times.
