Martino turns focus to return leg

Barcelona manager Tata Martino claimed he will not get complacent about his side's prospects of reaching the last eight of the Champions League, despite beating Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

Lionel Messi and Daniel Alves scored for the Spanish league leaders against 10-man City, who had defender Martin Demichelis sent off.

Barcelona, who have reached at least the semi-finals in each of the last six seasons, are now red-hot favourites to progress.

But Martino said: "I am not taking it for granted but it is true we have done a good game away and we just have to repeat the same performance."

City have won all three of their away games so far in this season's Champions League, and Martino is wary of them after they defeated Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena.

Martino added: "We are going to keep on playing with the same intensity and the same commitment. We have a very tough rival at the same level. The only difference is we won an away game but we cannot forget that City lost at home to Munich and then won an away game."

Messi, who is Barcelona's record scorer, struck for the 338th time for the club from the penalty spot and Martino praised him, saying: "What I can say about Messi is his commitment to the team was really good."

Martino's side have been unfavourably compared to previous Barca teams but he believes they are showing their doubters their ability.

He said: "Every game is a chance to prove ourselves. We cannot forget we lost against Valencia 10 days ago but we are in a good moment right now."
