Laudrup: Swans sacked me by e-mail

Michael Laudrup has revealed he discovered he had been dismissed as Swansea manager via email, and says he was "very confused" about the sacking.

Michael Laudrup explained the details of his Swansea sacking to a news conference on Tuesday.
Michael Laudrup was surprisingly relieved of his duties at Swansea last month.

• Hicks: Focus on the future

Speaking for the first time since he was relieved of his duties at the Liberty Stadium on Feb. 4, Laudrup told a news conference he was shocked to find out he had been axed, having held what he felt was a positive conversation with chairman Huw Jenkins after speculation of disagreements and fallouts with some players and the board.

"What surprised me is that I had the meeting on Tuesday, but already on Monday the things I spoke to the chairman about were in the papers. I leave that with the chairman," Laudrup said.

"However, we ended up saying we had to stay together. We shook hands. Later that afternoon I received a mail saying due to breach of contract, with immediate effect they would terminate [my contract] -- just a few hours after we shook hands."

And Laudrup was left stunned by the decision to dismiss him, saying: "Of course, I was very confused. I called and I asked what is going on. We talked that morning and shook hands, but they said yeah, but after thinking -- it was a little difficult to hear what was said on the phone.

"Then I said, what does breach mean? He couldn't explain. He didn't really know. While I was on the phone, my wife said it was already on the internet that I had been dismissed."

Laudrup also claimed he had to wait nine days for a letter from the club detailing the reasons for his sacking, and when asked if he was satisfied with those reasons, responded: "I don’t know what word to use, silly or credible, but I can’t go into details. The chairman’s statement gives more questions than answers. He [Huw Jenkins] said at some point he wanted to find a position for Garry Monk but he said that two or three years ago.”

The former Denmark international also denied reports that cliques had formed in the dressing room, adding: “There are good relationships between players. In football when things are going well, there’s never any problems. There are always rumours when you are not winning games. It’s exactly the same as last season. It’s not just this club, it is any club. Look at Man Utd this season.

"90 percent is rumours. There are good journalists and bad journalists but there has to be a cause why they are not winning. Sometimes there are reasons."

Despite his perceived mistreatment, Laudrup, insisted he wishes the Swans no ill-feeling -- pointing to the their Capital One Cup triumph last year as the highlight of his time in South Wales.

"I will never forget that last season. To stand there in that special atmosphere with the trophy and in the top 10 when I had been told top 17 was the target," Laudrup said. "I will remember Swansea on the pitch, particularly Wembley. Historic has been mentioned. By you and others."
