Montella advises Conte over Capello

FC's Gab Marcotti discusses the feud between a title holding coach, Fabio Capello and his successor Antonio Conte.

Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella believes Antonio Conte would have been better off keeping quiet rather than answering back at Fabio Capello's criticism of his coaching style.

• Rzouki: Juve respond to Capello criticism

Capello said Conte was wrong to order his players in for an extra training session following a 2-2 draw with Hellas Verona recently. Following Sunday's 3-1 win over Chievo, Conte hit back at the Russia manager, scrutinising his achievements as Juve coach and suggesting the Bianconeri's recent success is only making him jealous.

Their argument is unnecessary, according to Montella, who believes Conte still needs to learn how to deal with criticism.

"I can understand the adrenaline and the stress after the match, but the tone was a bit too severe," Montella told RAI television. "In our jobs, we've also got to accept certain criticism, even if that can depend on the way it is formulated.

"We've got to be able to accept everything, even if it bothers you at times and you may want to get something off your chest. All the same, though, it's important that you remain within certain limits. In some aspects, I agree with Capello, and in others, I agree with Conte.

"Our league is far more difficult than others, in terms of how tactical and defensive it is. Therefore, Juventus can have problems beating sides like Chievo and Catania, who are at the bottom of the table, which is not necessarily the case in other leagues."

Now into his second season as Fiorentina coach, Montella is discovering for himself how difficult Serie A can be. Strugglers Cagliari and Udinese have both beaten the Viola this season and dented their hopes of playing in the Champions League next year, an ambition which suffered a setback in defeat to Inter Milan at the weekend.

They are still on course for silverware this season, however, having reached the final of the Coppa Italia, where they will face Napoli at the start of May, while they have high hopes of success in the Europa League, where they meet Esbjerg in the last 32 on Thursday.

"Winning is always emotional and I wouldn't pick one over the other," he said. "The Coppa Italia final is two months away and we've got the Europa League first. We have high hopes in both competitions."
