Hamburg dismiss Bert van Marwijk

Hamburg have confirmed the dismissal of coach Bert van Marwijk after their 4-2 defeat at Eintracht Braunschweig.

Former Netherlands coach Van Marwijk had been expected to lose his job earlier in the week, having lost six games in succession in the Bundesliga, but he held onto his job after a vote among the club’s board of directors.

However, Hamburg then lost 5-0 to Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal in midweek and then sustained a sixth successive league defeat as they were beaten by Braunschweig, the only side below them in the standings.

After the match, HSV sporting director Oliver Kreuzer said: "There were unbelievable mistakes on the pitch, so it is not so much that we have a problem with the coaching position, but we must see what we can do. And our coach has to be judged above all else on results."

The news of his exit was confirmed via Twitter later on Saturday evening.

Hamburg, the only side never to have been relegated from the Bundesliga, had been expected to appoint Felix Magath but, after the directors’ vote failed to oust Van Warwijk, the former Bayern coach said he would not return as “too many old forces” at the club were not interested “in an honest restart.” Magath has since taken charge at Fulham.

Mirko Slomka has been touted as a potential alternative in the German media, with Bild suggesting he could be appointed on Sunday.
