Bayern and Dortmund win big

Xherdan Shaqiri celebrates his first goal in the victory over Freiburg.

Bayern Munich warmed up for their trip to Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday night with a comfortable 4-0 win over Freiburg keeping them on course for the Bundesliga title.

Dante put Pep Guardiola's men in front in the 19th minute before two deflected goals from Xherdan Shaqiri put them three ahead before half-time.

Guardiola made changes in the second half, giving the likes of Philipp Lahm and Arjen Robben a break and introducing Bastian Schweinsteiger before Claudio Pizarro sealed victory late on.

Borussia Dortmund got the better of Eintracht Frankfurt for the second time in five days as they beat Armin Veh's men 4-0.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbed a brace before a Robert Lewandowski penalty early in the second half effectively sealed Dortmund's win.

New signing Milos Jojic then came on to score his first Dortmund goal as the Westphalians increased the pressure on second-placed Bayer Leverkusen in the pursuit of runaway league leaders Bayern.

Schalke narrowed the gap on second-placed Bayer Leverkusen with a 2-1 win at the BayArena.

Leon Goretzka put the Royal Blues ahead against the run of play in the 28th minute before an own goal from Felipe Santana gave Leverkusen a deserved equaliser.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored once again while Leverkusen were dominating, earning Schalke their fourth consecutive win in 2014 and inflicting Leverkusen's second defeat of the new year.

There was further misery for Hamburg, meanwhile, as they conceded two late goals in a 4-2 defeat at Eintracht Braunschweig -- a result which ultimately cost coach Bert van Marwijk his job.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga put Hamburg ahead with their first goal of 2014, but two Dominik Kumbela efforts turned the game around.

Ivo Ilicevic brought Hamburg on terms once again, but Kumbela completed his hat trick before Jan Hochscheidt sealed victory for Torsten Lieberknecht's men, who are now just a point adrift of Hamburg at the foot of the table.

Ludovic Obraniak salvaged Werder Bremen a point and left Borussia Moenchengladbach still waiting for their first win of 2014 by settling a 1-1 draw at the Weserstadion.

Raffael gave Gladbach the lead in the sixth minute, but Bremen did not give up and they got their reward two minutes from time when winter signing Obraniak opened his account for the club at just the right time.

Hoffenheim took the honours in the Baden-Wurttemberg derby, increasing the pressure on Stuttgart coach Thomas Schneider with a 4-1 win.

Two goals from Sven Schipplock and a Kevin Volland strike put Markus Gisdol's men on the road to victory before Antonio Rudiger pulled a goal back for the visitors.

Roberto Firmino then sealed victory for Hoffenheim, who condemned Stuttgart to their fifth defeat in five games in 2014, leaving them hovering just above the relegation zone and without Moritz Leitner next weekend after he was sent off.
