Farina: Del Piero rumours are garbage

Under-fire Sydney FC coach Frank Farina insists Alessandro Del Piero is not after his role, claiming the rumours are “garbage”.

Frank Farina is set to make his A-League return this weekend as coach of Sydney FC
Frank Farina's Sydney FC side have lost a club-record three home games in a row

Pressure has mounted on the embattled boss after the side’s 3-0 drubbing to Adelaide at Allianz Stadium on Saturday, during which the fans protested with banners against the coach, with one fan even covering Farina with beer.

Sydney have lost seven of their last 10 games, and while reports have surfaced suggesting that Sky Blues star Del Piero is ready to replace the coach, Farina claims neither he nor the Italian captain know anything more.

"The rumours, I don’t know who starts them, Alessandro [Del Piero] doesn’t know who started them either. It’s ridiculous," Farina told Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast on Friday.

Farina’s contract runs to the end of the season and looks unlikely to be renewed unless he can reverse the side’s form, which has seen them lose a club-record three in a row at home.

The 49-year-old coach believes the rumours are being resurrected after Del Piero offered to take over after former coach Ian Crook resigned in mid-season last year before Farina was chosen.

“He said to me he never said anything like that and I think it dates back to when Ian Crook resigned,” Farina continued.

“I can guarantee everyone that he’s not gunning for my job, we’ve got a great relationship. When you go through a week like this there’s a lot of bombs that are thrown and if you read those articles that came out about Alessandro he wasn’t quoted in them at all. It was garbage.”

Del Piero has been at Sydney since 2012 and while the forward has been linked with Farina’s role, the 39-year-old World Cup winner does not actually have the required coaching qualifications necessary to lead the side.

Sydney currently sit one point outside the top six of the Australian A-League on 22 points, trailing leaders Brisbane Roar by 16 points after 18 games each.
