Szczesny ready to rebound vs. Reds

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has insisted his team will not be haunted by their 5-1 hammering at the hands of Liverpool last weekend, as they prepare for a quick-fire rematch with Brendan Rodgers’ men in the FA Cup on Sunday.

• Delaney: Missed opportunity
• Mangan: A stabilising point
• Robson: Arsenal lack in attack

Liverpool will look to repeat their dominant display when they visit Emirates Stadium on Sunday, but Szczesny suggests the scars of their thumping at Anfield will not be a factor in the fifth round tie.

The Gunners keeper posted a personal apology to the club’s fans on Facebook following the defeat last weekend and he is predicting a very different outcome when the two sides face off again.

Wojciech Szczesny put in a Man of the Match display against Manchester United.

“It will be a big game for us because we conceded five against them and it was a little bit humiliating,” Szczesny told reporters after his side’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Wednesday.

“You can’t say you saw the real Arsenal at Anfield. You have to judge us over a longer period of time. People have seen the real Arsenal over the last year. We conceded five on Saturday, but our defensive record over the last year or so has been amazing.

“We want to recover as soon as possible and it is a good chance that we play them a week afterwards. I would like to say it was a one-off, but there were two of them [heavy defeats, the other coming in a 6-3 reverse to Manchester City] this season.

“It was just an accident, it happened. Liverpool were terrific offensively, we were a little bit weak defensively and got punished. I certainly believe it is out of our system now because we turned up against United with a good defensive show.

“You saw that against United, we didn’t concede against a top side with fantastic strikers and we hope to do that against Liverpool.”

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud echoed the sentiments of his teammate, as he told the club’s official website that the performance against United on Wednesday confirmed the shock of the Anfield mauling is already out of the Gunners’ system.

“I think we had a good reaction after the bad result against Liverpool,” Giroud said. “I think it’s a good draw to be honest even if we could have scored at the end. It was maybe just about our confidence. We did well in the first half especially, but after we looked a bit tired.

“It’s OK, we had a good reaction on the pitch and I think that’s the most important thing even if we wanted to win this game. I’m confident for the remaining games and we’ll know a bit more about our future after Liverpool and Bayern [Munich next Tuesday] because we want to play in every competition.”
