Romeu sidelined after knee surgery

Valencia midfielder Oriol Romeu faces more than a month on the sidelines after an operation on the knee that has troubled him in the past.

The on-loan Chelsea player, 22, suffered a meniscus tear in his right knee -- which he injured last season -- during training. On Monday, he was operated on by Barcelona surgeon Ramon Cugat.

A Valencia club statement said the operation had been a success and predicted that Oriol would be back in action towards the end of March.

"The midfielder Oriol Romeu has been operated on this afternoon with a satisfactory outcome, using arthroscopy, to deal with an internal meniscus tear in his right knee," it read. "The recovery period is estimated at four to six weeks."

Romeu had anterior cruciate reconstruction surgery and medial meniscus repair after injuring the knee while playing for Chelsea against Sunderland at Stamford Bridge in December 2012.

Surgery on that occasion was also carried out by Cugat, and the injury rule Romeu out of action for six months.

The Barca youth product has established himself in the Valencia starting XI under new coach Juan Antonio Pizzi, and talk of a possible permanent summer move to the Mestalla has increased.
