Arjen Robben closing in on new deal

Arjen Robben has revealed that he is on the verge of signing a new contract with Bayern Munich.

Arjen Robben has been in inspirational form for Bayern this season.
Arjen Robben is enjoying life at Bayern Munich.

Schaaf: Bayern at their best

Robben, 30, has 18 months remaining on his current deal, but Voetbal International claimed earlier this week that the Netherlands international is set to extend his stay at the Allianz Arena until 2017. According to the magazine, the final negotiations will “not take longer than 10 minutes.”

And Robben has since confirmed to Bild that talks are at an advanced stage, although he denied that a dispute over wages is proving to be a sticking point as some have suggested.

“There is most likely going to be one more round [of talks]. And should everyone be happy after that, it’s a done deal,” Robben said. “Both sides have the intention to prolong [my stay]. Only minor details need to be discussed. But it’s not about the wages, as I’ve read somewhere. That’s nonsense.”

Robben is one of the biggest earners at Bayern, with his annual salary reported to be somewhere in the region of eight million euros.

The winger, though, stated that how much he earns is not important, but rather it is whether a club is appreciating his efforts that matters to him most.

“It’s not only about the sheer amount. It is also about the acknowledgement and appreciation,” he said, before giving the example of an employee earning 200 euros less following a contract extension. “It’s normal to wonder what you have done wrong. Are they not satisfied with me? It’s not about whether it’s 1,000 or a million euros.”

The former Real Madrid man also reiterated that Bayern could be his final club before he hangs up his boots.

“Maybe so, yes. We’ve got a super, super team. The future looks very bright. There is still time for titles and I want to collect a few more. And I am at the right club for that,” Robben said.

“Moreover there is nowhere better to go from here. You always go one better as a young professional. But there is nothing better than Bayern. I joined Chelsea and Madrid when I was still very young. And now I am at the best club in the world. I can no longer better myself.”
