Pardew saddened by Kinnear departure

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has claimed he was ‘sad’ to see Director of Football Joe Kinnear leave the club, despite his lack of success in attracting new players to the club.

Duffy: Was Joe Kinnear just Ashley's patsy all along?
Ryder: Cabaye's exit shows Newcastle's lack of ambition

Kinnear failed to complete a single permanent transfer in his controversial seven-month stint at the club, with the end of his stay at Newcastle being confirmed by a brief club statement on Monday evening.

The only Newcastle signings during Joe Kinnear's spell as Director of Football were the loan captures of Loic Remy and Luuk de Jong.

Many believed Kinnear’s departure strengthened Pardew’s position at Newcastle, but the second longest-serving manager in the Premier League has moved to stress he was not pleased to see the back of his Director of Football.

“I’m just sad to see anybody lose their job, as Joe has,” stated Pardew. “He did a lot of good work here, but that decision was the board’s decision and we have to now work towards getting us and our position in the league more secure. My job is the next game and that’s what I’m focusing on.”

Pardew went on to insist he would be happy to work with another transfer supremo, although it can only be assumed he would like to have more input into the identity of that individual after Kinnear was thrust upon him last summer.

“I have no problem with directors of football,” added Pardew. “In the modern game, a lot of clubs have directors of football.

“There is so much involved in transfers in terms of the other club, agents, the preparation for the bid and the finances that are involved now that it goes way past what we used to do ten years ago.

“I’m old enough now to have been in a time when I was involved in the financial part of a transfer, but that part of it has gone from managers and has gone from me for the last six or seven years and probably that’s how it should be.”

Former Newcastle player and manager Alan Shearer believes Pardew should be consulted if the club appoint a new Director of Football, as he admitted the Kinnear appointment remains as baffling now as it was the day the club confirmed his arrival.

“If they want to go down that line [with a new Director of Football], it has to be the manager that appoints, or else he is fighting a losing battle,” Shearer told the Newcastle Chronicle, before pointing the finger of blame for the lack of new signings at club owner Mike Ashley.

“There’s only one guy who can make those decisions. It’s not the director of football. It’s not the manager, it’s the owner, who signs the cheques,” he added.
